For the less traditional folks this Valentine’s Day, we’ve selected an awesome range of less predictable gifts that we’d actually be psyched to give or receive, some of which are made here at Southport Grocery.
We have a huge range of preserves available year round and here are some of our favorites: Dilly Beans, Cherry Chutney and Bread & Butter Pickles. Our Dilly Beans are still crunchy, and have an unwavering bouquet of spices, plus the kind of smooth vinegar bite that you only get with years of perfecting pickling. They’re fantastic in a tall Bloody Mary, or laying down with some condiment friends in a hotdog, or – heck – we just love to munch them on their own!
If you’re nuts about someone, why not show them with these tasty snacks? On the left we have our very own Vanilla Walnuts. We add these bad boys to just about everything from baked goods to salads and they make a fantastic snack! Freshly roasted and packed with healthy Omega-3 fatty acids – how can you resist!
We also love Mama’s Nuts Mocha Stout Almonds – another great locally made snack for the coffee table.
These awesome beans from Rancho Gordo in Napa, CA, are true black turtle beans with a rich, traditional black bean flavor and texture. They’re super fresh so very little soaking is required. Of course they’re great on their own but they’ll also cook up fantastically in a chili or stew.
One of our all time favorites is Chicago based Grown Up KidStuff’s Chocolate Sauce with Grand Marnier Liqueur. Grab 2 spoons and share it with your Valentine right out of the jar, or get fancy and make a sinful ice cream sundae. Either way you’re gonna love it!
Hailing from Ann Arbor, Clancy’s Fancy Hot Sauces pack quite the punch. Pictured here is the mild version but we carry 2 other varieties in the grocery as well – hot and extra hot! Pick your heat level and go!
Chicago based Think Jerky make grass-fed, non-GMO and gluten-free jerky that comes in a variety of unique flavors like Ginger Orange, described by the creator as containing classic ingredients from East Asian cooking, “layering savory atop citrus with a ginger bite for a distinct, singular flavor.” It’s a flavor and protein packed gift!
For those who like things a little cheesier, we have Old Taylor Street Cheese Sprinkle from The Spice House. It’s a rich blend of romano cheese and garlic – so it’s perfect for making garlic bread or as a salt alternative. It’s also great for breading chicken, steaks, zucchini and eggplant. Yes, it’s another Chicago favorite! We love our local products!
Last but certainly not least, we have a Mustard Q BBQ Sauce from Wicker Park’s Smoke Daddy, which combines the zesty flavors of apple cider vinegar and spiced mustard to stimulate the senses. It works great on just about anything but it’s especially good on pork, chicken, burgers and lamb. The perfect gift for the meat lover in your life.
